Barcelona are edging closer to finalising the return of Joao Cancelo, with the Portuguese full-back set to begin his second loan spell at the club, this time arriving from Al-Hilal.
While the deal itself has been widely discussed in recent days, a new report from SPORT has shed light on why Hansi Flick has personally approved the move.
From the outset, Flick has been clear about his priorities. The German coach publicly admitted that Barcelona needed to strengthen their defence, but only through a smart and meaningful operation.
Given the club’s financial limits, signing a traditional centre-back was never realistic in January.
Instead, Flick pushed for a solution that would improve the squad without disrupting its balance, and Cancelo fits that idea perfectly.
Flick’s approval is rooted in tactical flexibility. With Cancelo in the squad, Barcelona effectively double their full-back options on both flanks.
The Portuguese defender is comfortable playing on either side, which gives the coach greater freedom when setting up his back line.
This flexibility also has a knock-on effect on other defenders. Players such as Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia can now move back into central defensive roles, where Flick believes they can perform at their best.
Another key benefit of Cancelo’s arrival is its impact on Gerard Martin. Until now, Martin has often been used as a backup left-back.
With Cancelo covering both wings, Martin is expected to be freed from that role and focus on developing as a centre-back.
Experience has also played a major role in Flick’s decision. Cancelo is a proven performer at the highest level, with years of experience in elite competitions.
Importantly, he already knows what it means to play for Barcelona. Having spent a full season at the club, he understands the demands, the pressure and the style of football, which should make his reintegration smooth and immediate.
