FIFA is preparing for the possibility of Iran withdrawing from the 2026 World Cup with a new idea that could give the Italian national team hope of appearing in the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Although Italy’s hopes of returning to the global stage were shattered after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in the European playoff final, the Azzurri may still have one last chance to change their fate.
Iran’s position regarding participation in next summer’s tournament remains unclear amid the ongoing war involving the country, despite assurances from FIFA president Gianni Infantino that Iran will compete in Group Seven alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand.
As it stands, Iran is scheduled to begin its campaign on June 16 against New Zealand, then face Belgium in California, and finally play Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle.
A continental playoff for the first time
Iran could be forced to withdraw, especially after FIFA refused to move its matches outside the United States, which may put the organization in a difficult position just weeks before the tournament begins.
However, FIFA appears to be preparing a backup plan. According to a report by RMC Sport citing The Athletic, discussions are ongoing about organizing a special continental playoff if Iran withdraws.
This playoff would include two teams from Asia and two from Europe among those that failed to qualify for the World Cup.
Based on FIFA rankings, Italy is considered a strong candidate to take one of the European spots if this scenario is implemented.
Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time (after 2018 and 2022), following its loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This failure led to major consequences, including the departure of coach Gennaro Gattuso and the resignation of the Italian federation president.
The United Arab Emirates national team could also be a candidate to participate in the exceptional playoff after being eliminated by Iraq, which advanced through the intercontinental playoff to the finals.
